Late seral stage of reed-swamp vegetation with Equisetum fluviatile becoming displaced by rapidly advancing flowering plant growth. Slapton Lea, south Devon, early August

The history of the site is thus often also important, for in our much modified landscape, man has in many ways influenced these natural vegetation progressions, whilst creating other sites where such progressions, and the species associated with them, can begin anew. In more recently abandoned sand and gravel extraction pits and in abandoned, newly flooded, quarry workings, for example, as well as on the margins of some ponds, some of the early seral stages of pondside vegetation succession can sometimes be seen. By contrast, and equally important, in the longer-undisturbed aspects of lakeside reedswamps, fens and some marshes, the mature aspects of such vegetation succession are typically present.

Various pteridophytes are characteristic of different stages in such vegetation seres.
